NPT Thread Corrosion JIP
Project Status: Concept and Participant Definition Stage
In an earlier end-user funded study the effect of insufficient thread engagement in small-bore NPT threaded connections was examined (published in ASME PVP2010-25954). The major finding of this study was that the strength of the NPT threaded connection is sufficient to hold normal pipe operating pressure, even with very few threads engaged. It has been suggested that this study could be extended to cover other NPT thread deficiencies that are also discovered during onsite inspection, such as corrosion of the threads.
The goal of this JIP will be to develop industry guidance on the maximum allowable pressure of corroded NPT threaded connections. Significant effort will be required within the guideline to provide an estimate of the accuracy of thread degradation measurement using external inspection techniques (RT, UT).
